BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 5, 2026) – Seven outstanding Alabama seniors were honored with $5,000 scholarships at the AmFirst and WBRC 6’s Rising Star ceremony on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Rising Star program highlights the achievements of exemplary students who are making a difference in their communities. WBRC 6 and AmFirst honor a student each week during the school year, naming them an official Rising Star and making them eligible for year-end scholarships. At the end of the year, all 30 honorees interview for the chance to receive one of six scholarships.
This year’s Rising Star scholarship winners are:
- Bryce Afshar, Hubbertville School
- Carlie Chesson, Jacksonville Christian Academy
- Kyla Brown, Central High School of Clay County
- Nigel Boler, Woodlawn High School
- Ty Stripling, Northside High School
- Yariheisy Villa, Susan Moore High School

“These students were selected not only for their academic achievement and involvement but also for their commitment to service and willingness to lead others,” said AmFirst President and CEO Kevin Morris. “This year’s Rising Star honorees are truly exceptional and inspire us with their commitment to making a positive impact.”
In addition to the six Rising Star scholarships, AmFirst awarded a seventh scholarship, the Bill and Pat Connor Scholarship, to Lane Crowe of Homewood High School. The Bill and Pat Connor Scholarship, which was named after former CEO and President Bill Connor and his wife, Pat, is awarded annually to recognize the excellence of a dependent of an AmFirst employee.

“Lane exemplifies what makes AmFirst so special,” said Morris. “Their dedication to service, leadership, and academic excellence reflects the values at the heart of our credit union. We are proud to invest in students who are already shaping a brighter future for our communities and state.”
Honorees and their families came from across Alabama to celebrate their achievements and success at the ceremony. The event included remarks from community leaders, recognition of each scholar’s accomplishments, and opportunities for the students to connect with mentors and peers.
AmFirst remains committed to supporting education and community growth through programs like Rising Star, which continue to highlight and uplift promising young leaders throughout Alabama.
